The companies of Engine 304 and Ladder 162 have a long standing history of serving the City of New York. Engine 304 was organized October 16, 1923 and was temporarily quartered at Hempstead Avenue and 217th Street. Ladder 162 was organized on January 14th, 1928 and together with Engine 304, moved into their new, permanent quarters at 218-44 97th Avenue in Queens Village, where we have served the citizens of Eastern Queens for the past 80 years. Our primary response areas include the residential communities of Queens Village, Hollis, Bellerose, Floral Park, and Cambria Heights. Our commercial and light industrial occupancies are mostly concentrated in an East-West corridor between Jamaica and Hempstead Avenues and along Springfield Boulevard. The large concentration of highways and high speed access roads (Cross Island Parkway, Belt Parkway & Conduit, Southern State Parkway, Clearview Expressway, Northern State Parkway, Hillside Avenue, Jamaica Avenue/Jericho Turnpike) make up a portion of the emergency workload. Because of our location in Eastern Queens adjacent to the Nassau County line, we have come to be known by our geographically inspired nickname, the “Border Patrol”.
